Fiber Internet FAQs
Fiber internet transmits data using pulses of light through thin glass fibers, each fiber approximately the width of a strand of hair. Data is converted into pulses of light, which travel along the fiber-optic cables. The fiber-optic modem in your home converts the light signals into electrical signals that our devices can process. Since light signals can travel faster and further and with less interference than electrical signals, the result is a stronger internet connection for all your devices.
While 5G technology offers fast speeds for your phone, fiber internet is a much better option for daily home internet use. Both types of internet offer speeds between 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps, but 5G can encounter slowdowns due to network congestion, weather, distance from towers and physical obstacles. Fiber’s performance and reliability make it a better option for most internet users.
Fiber internet uses a device similar to a modem called an optical network terminal (ONT). An ONT converts the optical signals it receives from the fiber line into electrical signals that our devices can understand. Mercury provides a combination ONT-router during the set-up and installation of your fiber internet service.
Mercury offers several fiber internet plan options starting at $79.
Our fiber internet routers can provide coverage for homes up to 2,500 square feet. If you need more coverage, you can add Mercury Whole Home Wi-Fi to your fiber plan, which provides a mesh Wi-Fi extender to ensure every room in your home is connected to fast, reliable internet.
Here are some ways fiber internet outperforms other internet options:
Speed: Fiber is the only internet connection that offers ultra-fast symmetrical upload and download speeds.
Latency: Fiber’s low latency creates a more responsive and reliable internet experience, especially for activities like online gaming, where low latency is crucial.
Reliability: Fiber is less susceptible to interference, making it the most reliable internet option.

Fiber internet offers superior performance, advanced Whole Home Wi-Fi, and cybersecurity features, making it the best choice for home internet.
Mercury’s 100% Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) service connects fiber optic cables directly to your home for ultra-fast service and reliability. Fiber-powered service, often referred to as Fiber-to-the-Curb (FTTC), stops short. It relies on copper wiring for the final connection, limiting speed and performance.
