Fiber Internet vs. the Other Guys

Fiber

  • speed
Lightning-fast, symmetrical upload and download speeds
  • reliability
    Minimal weather and electrical interference
  • latency
Low ping, ideal for real-time apps
  • scalability
    Future-proof capabilities

Cable

  • speed
Relatively high, but prioritizes downloads over uploads
  • reliability
    Prone to network congestion
  • latency
Moderate ping, impacting streaming and gaming
  • scalability
    Older infrastructure and slower upgrades

Satellite

  • speed
Generally lower and often has data limits
  • reliability
Susceptible to weather disruptions, including cloud cover
  • latency
Delays due to distance between your home and satellite in space
  • scalability
Widely available, but high costs limit access

DSL

  • speed
Limited by distance from the provider
  • reliability
Uses phone lines, which can degrade quickly
  • latency
    Higher than fiber
  • scalability
    Older technology with limited improvements

Fixed Wireless

  • speed
Mid-range, but can vary with weather and other obstructions
  • reliability
    Line-of-sight dependency
  • latency
Higher than fiber but lower than satellite
  • scalability
    Tower coverage can limit expansion

What Is Fiber Internet?

Fiber Internet FAQs

Fiber internet is a high-speed broadband connection that uses fiber-optic technology to transmit data as light signals. Because it uses light instead of electricity, fiber internet is faster, more reliable and more secure than cable, satellite, fixed wireless and DSL.

Mercury proudly serves Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio. To see if fiber internet is available at your home, check your address here.

Fiber internet transmits data using pulses of light through thin glass fibers, each fiber approximately the width of a strand of hair. That data travels along the fiber-optic cables and is then converted by an optical network terminal (ONT) in your home into electrical signals your device can understand.

Fiber internet offers equally fast upload and download speeds ranging anywhere from 100 Mbps on basic plans to 1 Gig and beyond on more robust multi-gig internet plans.

Due to fiber internet’s faster speeds, lower latency and ultra-reliability, it is generally considered the best internet option available.

Fiber internet is installed by running fiber-optic cables from the central network to a box connected to your home. Then, the cables are connected to the ONT inside your home. All of this is completed by professionals from start to finish, including testing your new network to ensure it’s performing optimally.

Traditional modems are not compatible with fiber internet, so an optical network terminal (ONT) is required to translate the light signals into electricity your devices can understand. On installation day, Mercury will supply all necessary equipment and ensure it’s working properly before leaving your home.

Mercury offers competitively priced fiber internet plans starting at $79. All plans come with transparent pricing, no hidden fees and special offers for new customers, ensuring you get the best deal.
